Samsung Galaxy A18 vs Galaxy A17: New Chip, One UI 9, and Whether an Upgrade Makes Sense

Nam Bui·October 22, 2026·5 min read

Samsung's Galaxy A18 goes on sale in Vietnam starting October 12, 2026, arriving as a modest refresh of the Galaxy A17 LTE it sits alongside in the company's lineup. According to Vietnam.vn, the new model swaps the A17 LTE's Helio G99 processor for a Helio G99+, ships with Android 17 and One UI 9 out of the box, and carries a higher dust-resistance rating. Both phones share a 6.7-inch display and a 50MP main camera, which means the differences between them are narrower than a generation gap might suggest.

Vietnam.vn reports that the A18 is positioned for buyers who want a long-lived device with newer software and better protection in dusty environments, while the A17 remains a reasonable choice for people who record video often. Pricing at retailer CellphoneS in October 2026 is listed at VND 7,190,000 for the Galaxy A18 in its 6GB/128GB configuration and VND 5,790,000 for the Galaxy A17 8GB/128GB version.

Why it matters

The comparison is a useful snapshot of how Samsung is handling its entry-level Galaxy A series in Southeast Asia. Rather than redesigning the hardware, the company is leaning on a slightly faster chip, a newer software layer, and a higher ingress protection rating to justify a new model number. That approach puts pressure on buyers to decide whether those changes are worth the price difference, especially when the outgoing phone still performs well for everyday tasks.

It also highlights a quirk in Samsung's regional lineup. Vietnam.vn notes that the Galaxy A17 comes in two variants with different silicon: the LTE model uses the Helio G99, while the 5G version runs on an Exynos 1330. The A18's comparison therefore applies specifically to the LTE A17, not the 5G model.

What the Helio G99+ actually changes

Samsung claims the Helio G99+ delivers more power than the Helio G99 it replaces, and Vietnam.vn cites Sforum testing to fill in the picture. A 4GB RAM version of the Galaxy A18 scored 615,260 points on AnTuTu V12 and ran Arena of Valor on Ultra High graphics settings, though with occasional minor stutter. The same outlet found the Galaxy A17 LTE handled social media smoothly, played video without trouble, and ran Arena of Valor steadily on medium graphics.

The A18 also adds LPDDR5 memory and RAM Plus functionality, which Vietnam.vn says shortens response times when switching between multiple open apps. For people whose phone use is mostly messaging, browsing, and light games, the publication's assessment is that the new chip alone is not a strong reason to move from the A17.

Software support and the durability trade-offs

The software gap is the clearest difference. The Galaxy A18 launches on Android 17 with One UI 9, two generations ahead of the Android 15 and One UI 7 that the A17 LTE shipped with. Samsung has committed to up to six generations of operating system updates and six years of security patches for both devices, according to Vietnam.vn. Because the A18 starts from a newer baseline, it can reach two further Android versions than the A17 over the same support window.

The A18 also includes a feature called Find the Look, which lets users search for information and purchase locations for clothing seen in an image.

On durability, the two phones diverge in ways that cut in opposite directions. The Galaxy A18 carries an IP64 rating, one step above the A17's IP54 for dust protection. Vietnam.vn cautions that Samsung advises against contact with seawater, pool water, and soapy water, and against using either device in a sauna. In glass, however, the older phone is better equipped: the A17 uses Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+, a cover material typically reserved for higher-tier models, while the A18 uses Gorilla Glass 3.

Camera hardware is another point where the A17 leads. Both phones have a 50MP main sensor, but only the A17 includes optical image stabilization, which reduces shake in video recorded while moving. The two models otherwise share the same 6.7-inch Super AMOLED Full HD+ panel with a 90Hz refresh rate and the same three-camera rear setup.

Who should upgrade, and who should not

Vietnam.vn's guidance for current Galaxy A17 owners is that an upgrade is not necessary while the phone is still working well, given the shared screen and camera configuration. The A17 is described as the better fit for people who frequently film video while traveling, thanks to that stabilized main camera.

The A18 becomes worth considering in a few specific situations: if the existing A17 has a failing battery or a cracked screen, if the user needs IP64 protection for dusty conditions, or if someone wants One UI 9 from day one and prefers the longer runway of software updates that comes with starting on a newer Android version.

Buyers weighing either model can find both at CellphoneS, which Vietnam.vn lists as offering trade-in programs, a student discount for those who show a student ID in store, and free delivery on orders above VND 300,000 when placed through its website.

What to watch

The next signal will be how Samsung prices and positions the A18 outside Vietnam, and whether the company brings the same chip and software combination to the 5G tier, where the A17 currently uses an Exynos 1330. Buyers in the market for a budget Galaxy A phone should also watch for retail promotions around the October 12 launch, since the A17's larger 8GB memory configuration currently sits below the A18's 6GB model on price.
